Jose Sena, known professionally as Nego Gato, returns to the Pittsburgh for workshops and a concert with The Nego Gato African Brazilian Band at the Union Project on Negley Avenue on Saturday, February 20 at 8 PM. They present the living history of Africans brought to Brazil during the period of the slave trade through the music and dance that has survived for over 500 years. The director of the Company, Jose Sena grew up immersed in the sounds of Carnaval, Candomble Spirituality and the street music of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Their music features a mix of American jazz styles mixed with a background of traditional African Brazilian rhythms of Samba, Ijexa, Samba Reggae and Samba Afro. There is plenty of room to dance.
